The Week Ahead
The Weekend Signal
Kevin Warsh is making headlines for the right reasons β and wrong reasons for rate-sensitive assets. Multiple WSJ and NYT pieces over the weekend flagged the Fed chair’s hawkish pivot, with Warsh openly making the case for higher rates and Fed’s Hammack adding that “now is the time to act.” Markets are now bracing for a possible rate hike, a scenario few had priced entering September. The signal is unambiguous: the Fed’s tolerance for residual inflation is shrinking, and the bar for staying put has risen sharply.
China offered a partial counterweight. Official PMI data showed factory activity contracting for a second straight month, but the miss was narrower than expected β enough for WSJ to headline an “impending turnaround.” The Shanghai Composite ended the week at 3,965 CNY, up +2.15% on the week, suggesting domestic investors are leaning into the recovery narrative. Whether August trade data due Tuesday confirms that optimism will be the week’s first major test.
The Macro Setup
The indicator picture is coherent but uncomfortable. The UST10Y sits at 4.72, near its 52-week high of 4.74, with no relief on Friday β unchanged on the day. The DE10Y hit 3.3, matching its own 52-week high, up +0.92% on the day, while EURIBOR3M reached 2.57, also at its 52-week peak and up +1.98% week-over-week. Rates are elevated globally, and they are not easing. EUR/USD slipped to 1.16 (-0.85% on the day), consistent with the dollar catching a bid on Warsh’s hawkish tone. The one apparent divergence: VIX at 14.43 β subdued, down -4.63% on the week β suggests equity markets have not yet priced the rate-hike risk that bond markets are whispering. That gap between complacent equity volatility and elevated yields is worth watching closely entering September.
The Calendar
China’s August trade data (exports prior: +17.8%, imports prior: +21.3%) lands Tuesday and is the week’s highest-stakes macro release β any deceleration would complicate the recovery story equity markets have been buying. Also Tuesday, a US 3-Year Note auction will offer a real-time read on demand at elevated yields near the 52-week high. South Korea reports August unemployment (prior: 2.8%) Tuesday night. Chile’s central bank meets Tuesday with rates previously at 4.5%, though no consensus forecast is available. There are no major earnings on the docket this week, leaving macro catalysts to drive investors.
