The Week Ahead
The Weekend Signal
The dominant weekend story is the collision between renewed Middle East attacks and the rate-policy outlook. Oil-driven inflation fears are pushing mortgage rates to their highest since June 2025, and markets are increasingly pricing Fed Governor Kevin Warsh as a hawkish actor โ with some positioning for a September rate hike. The New York Times framed Warsh as caught in a “no-win situation,” but the bond market isn’t waiting for nuance: UST10Y hit 4.76 at week’s end, a fresh 52-week high, up +0.85% on the day. If Middle East escalation persists into next week, energy costs stay elevated, and Warsh’s credibility on inflation becomes the week’s central narrative.
The cross-asset read is straightforward but uncomfortable. Higher-for-longer rates pressure housing further โ affordability isn’t expected to recover until 2027 โ while the geopolitical bid lifts energy and compresses risk appetite across rate-sensitive sectors.
The Macro Setup
Every major rate indicator is flashing elevated. UST10Y at 4.76 and DE10Y at 3.34 are both sitting at their 52-week highs, with the German benchmark up +2.14% on the week. EURIBOR3M reached 2.57 โ also a 52-week high โ signaling that European short-end pricing has shifted decisively. EUR/USD holds at 1.16 with no daily movement, suggesting FX markets are in a holding pattern pending fresh catalysts. VIX at 14.92 is near its 52-week low of 14.25, down -5.87% on the week โ an unusual divergence. Equities are pricing calm; bond markets are pricing stress. That gap rarely closes peacefully. Asia showed mixed resolution: the Shanghai Composite posted a strong +2.69% weekly gain to 3,986 CNY, and KOSPI rose +1.84% to โฉ6,820, while ASX 200 slipped -0.30% to A$9,076 and the Nikkei edged up +1.20% to ยฅ66,312. The China rebound is worth watching โ if it’s demand-driven, it adds to global inflation pressure.
The Calendar
China’s August trade data drops Monday, with exports previously running at +17.8% and imports at +21.3% โ any deceleration would signal softening global demand and undercut the Shanghai rally’s narrative. Korea’s August unemployment rate (previous 2.8%) arrives Monday night Asia time. Chile’s interest rate decision Monday rounds out the EM calendar. On the US side, Monday also brings a 3-year Treasury note auction and bill auctions โ demand at these will be the first live test of how buyers feel about the current rate environment. US consumer credit for July prints Monday evening, offering a read on household resilience. No major earnings are scheduled, so macro and geopolitics drive the investor.
