The Day Ahead
Yesterday’s Takeaway
The Bank of Japan raised rates to a 31-year high, delivering the session’s defining moment โ yet US equities shrugged it off, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq posting their biggest single-day gains in six weeks. That resilience matters: it signals that markets read the BOJ move as a controlled normalization rather than a global liquidity shock. Asia carried the tone overnight, with the Nikkei 225 climbing to ยฅ65,235 (+1.71% day) and the KOSPI surging +2.57% to โฉ6,888. European bourses extended the bid, with the FTSE 100 leading at +1.95% on the week and the DAX up +1.40%.
The Setup
The risk picture is constructively mixed heading into September 18. VIX collapsed to 15.44 (-12.82% day), sitting just above its 52-week low of 14.32 โ volatility is being sold hard. The tension is in rates: UST10Y sits at 4.95 (+0.20% day), uncomfortably close to the 52-week high of 5.02, while DE10Y eased to 3.49 (-0.85% day), widening the transatlantic spread. EURIBOR3M at 2.66 is near its 52-week ceiling of 2.68. Large-cap tech is leading โ the Technology Select Sector SPDR is up +1.53% on the week โ while small-caps and financials lag materially, with the S&P 600 SmallCap Index down -6.67% over one month and the Financial Select Sector SPDR off -1.74% on the week. Breadth is not broadening in the US or Europe.
Today’s Watch
Fed Governor Bowman is scheduled to speak today (13:30 ET) โ her tone on the inflation outlook matters given the Fed’s recent hike and Trump’s public pressure for lower rates. AutoNation (-10.49%) and Sonic Automotive (-9.27%) cratered together, pointing to a consumer auto demand story worth tracking. Schrodinger (+26.37%) and Tempus AI (+14.85%) led biotech and AI-health, a pocket of genuine momentum. With UST10Y at 4.95 and stagflation rhetoric circulating in Reuters and the NYT, any upside yield surprise toward 5.02 is the session’s clearest macro risk.
